for everyone

I knew about these few years back when I was looking thru the list of world tallest mountains. But it seems that most of us(Malaysians) thought that Mount Kinabalu is Southeast Asia's tallest, well it is not. It is only the 5th tallest ...

What you knew was just the product of novel and excellent marketing of tour agencies to promote Mount Kinabalu as a popular tourist destination, well they are very wrong .... and irresponsible.

READ ON

What is the tallest mountain in Southeast Asia anyway? – lots of people would know how to answer this. The Internet is full of information about it and they all recognize Mt. Kinabalu in Malaysia as the highest point in our region. Is it really?

Is it true that Malaysian school textbooks indicates Kinabalu as the tallest in Southeast Asia? I can't remember .... I left school over a decade ago, lol!
drizad wrote on Dec 31, '07
yes, it was, but it is only partially correct. they should put Mount Kinabalu as the highest climber friendly mountain in SEA...

Cheers!

danlow wrote on Dec 31, '07

jungletrail wrote on Dec 31, '07
all this while I knew some mountains in Indonesia are taller than our Mt. Kinabalu but just don't know their names and locations.
yihfey wrote on Dec 31, '07
Good to know that. I always have the same impression that Mt. KK is the tallest mountain in SEA. I even promote the same thing to my Thai friends. Now, look like I am wrong...........

It was common knowledge Mount Kinabalu is the highest mountain in south east Asia during my school days. . . . . .
How come the school text books are wrong i don't know. . . . !!
forgettingissolong wrote on Jan 1, '08
Perhaps they don't count in Burma and the Indonesian half of Papua New Guinea island??
danlow wrote on Jan 1, '08
haha ... now let me test you, is Gua Niah the largest in the world?
danlow wrote on Jan 1, '08
yeah obviously .... intentionally or not, that I'm not very sure...
danlow wrote on Jan 1, '08
Happy to share with u today.....

I have hiked 2 of them, and visited another 2 before ... hopefully in my life time I will be able to hike another few of them.

Puncak Jaya also known as Carstensz Pyramid, located in Papua. It is now a concern for the natural lover in Indonesia, as massive mining is being carried out in this area. You can see the picture in the following webpage.

http://www.krakatoa1883.com/gedepangrango

Himalayan ranges is always my favorite and that Myanmar is sharing a small piece of cake for Himalayan ranges which covers mainly only 6 countries.

Mount Kerinci is the highest volcano in South East Asia.

There is another questions which all of you maybe able to share with me...which is the tallest waterfall in South east asia? somebody says Jelawang Waterfall (Below Gunung Stong Dabong) is the one. while some says the waterfall in Thailand. Any idea?
danlow wrote on Jan 1, '08, edited on Jan 1, '08
hey thanks for sharing ... but that link seems to be about Krakatoa?

yeah I heard about the Jelawang Waterfall claim as well .... may be I'll search the web for an answer soon.

I am wondering why they keep on tolerate until recently? Why not bring this out very earlier? Haha...

But honestly, because I never listen properly during school time, I thought Kinabalu only the tallest in Malaysia but not Southeast Asia... shame!
danlow wrote on Jan 1, '08
hmm no, the first few are too expensive and too technical for me.... from no.5 onward, they are more affordable and technically simple, more suitable for a leisure hiker like me..
danlow wrote on Jan 1, '08
If it is on the largest chambers category, then yes: Niah is the clear champion of the world.
if it is on the longest cave category ... then Mammoth Cave System in Kentucky, USA is the champion...
if it is on depth, then Voronja, Cave in Georgia, USA is the champion...

nahhh...nope. Even Mulu Sarawak Chamber is not the biggest. Never mind, we have the leaking Malaysia high court, that's good enough ;p

Agree with Dan, very technical...i read about the following webpage long ago, unless special training, and most important we need sponsors!!!! like our expedition team to everest, and our famous ANGKASAWAN...we need sponsors also...hahaha...

http://www.mountainmadness.com/sevensummits/carstensz.cfm

I put the page for Krakatoa, because there is a photo on the webpage showing the massive mining in Carstensz Pyramid..

Let me know the answer for the water fall if any..

GOSH! i should throw away my kinabalu T-Shirt (writen : if you never seen mt kinabalu, u never seen south east asia)
hehehehehehe.... but i still loving mt.kinabalu , it's still in Top 10 or Top 5 in SEA mar ....ok lar ,
most importantly it's near ! should feel proud already to be so close to SEA top 5 highest mountain .....
hillwalker wrote on Jan 3, '08
不知道怎样,听了后感觉很遗憾Mt.Kinabalu不是最高的!
一定要想办法把前四者铲平!!!!
danlow wrote on Jan 3, '08, edited on Jan 3, '08
哈哈哈,好主意!铲平后我们就是 no. One liao !!!
reachtheworld wrote on Jan 3, '08

人家喜马拉亚在长高,我们的寡妇山却像老人家驼背。哈哈哈
hillwalker wrote on Jan 3, '08
according to richardmtan 的website, Mt.Kinabalu 是第七咧
hillwalker wrote on Jan 3, '08
All right ! Papua New Guinea is a country from Oceania : Melanesia region .Not in Southeast Asia !
erm.....Hkakabo Razi well it is in Myanmar but it's range of Tibet/Central China ...
http://www.peakbagger.com/list.aspx?lid=1105

i don't know lar .....confusing ! !
danlow wrote on Jan 3, '08, edited on Jan 3, '08
The list in that link like not complete ler, how come get the no. 7?
danlow wrote on Jan 3, '08, edited on Jan 3, '08
hmmm.... I think if it is by country, Bruma and Indonesia is within SEA, so no matter what range or island they are from they belong to a SEA country...
Puncak Jaya for instant is in the territory of Papua New Guinea, Indonesia ... so no matter how it is in SEA. How can we exclude it anyway ... unless they declare independence huh..
hillwalker wrote on Jan 4, '08
dan , according to history i found out , they already declared independense from Australia since 1975 ...so i think i was taken care by Australia lar bro , not indonesia . But West New Guinea is belong to Indonesia lar . walao eh ...history test meh "baru" !
danlow wrote on Jan 4, '08
hahaha ..... and those few mountains are in West Papua ..... so should be obvious already they belong to Indonesia...
hillwalker wrote on Jan 5, '08
so dan , are we going to Hkakabo Razi or Puncak Jaya one day ? :-p
snowy freezing peak , it's torturing might kills & believe equipments also diffrent liao ....
i better & prefer hanging mountain around 3000m - 4000m .
danlow wrote on Jan 5, '08
hahaha if u ask me now, the answer is definately no........ they are technically to complicated for me and also too costly. But those ranked no. 5 and below are possible, we can do them one day, one fine day.... that's for sure. Which one will u choose first?
drizad wrote on Jan 6, '08
Bro... may I copy your information here to be put in my blog? I will add a link back to your post here.

Cheers!
danlow wrote on Jan 6, '08

keidou wrote on Sep 18, '09
japan history also dun have about what they have done lah ... if you mention the highest sure many ppl go hiking lah .... earn money is like that lah
sayli79 wrote on Aug 22, '11
technically difficult is probably why it was not brought up as tallest in SEA. Not many ppl knew it as well otherwise there would be guides there.. And that is why Mt K is probably called tallest climbable mountain in SEA.
